Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus announced the launch of a paid government internship program for students seeking careers in public service.
The college is partnering with Miami-Dade County and Miami-Dade County Clerk of the Court and Comptroller Juan Fernandez-Barquin to help students gain a foothold in local government and the legal industry.
The agreement was approved during a recent ceremony at the downtown campus which included Miami-Dade County officials, Miami Dade College President Madeline Pumariega and Fernandez-Barquin.
Pumariega said the college is stepping up its efforts to prepare students for careers in government and the best part about the latest project is they are getting paid for participating in the internship program.
“We’re focused on helping students prepare for careers by connecting classroom learning with practical experience,” she said.
The Clerk of the Court and Comptroller’s Office offers intern positions for students interested in public administration and legal fields.
Fernandez-Barquin oversees roughly 1,300 employees and manages 16 court facilities across 2,400 square miles. It is part of the fourth largest judicial circuit in the United States with an annual operating budget of about $145 million.
Miami-Dade County also offers internship programs for students to get a bird’s eye view on how their local government operates on a day-to-day basis.
Students can work in the mayor’s office, finance and accounting department, the budget office, county commissioners’ offices and transportation, just to name a few.
“Our aim is to engage students early in their academic journey and inspire them to consider meaningful careers in public service within Miami-Dade County,” a county spokesperson said.
Miami Dade College is broadening students’ job opportunities with internship programs.
In October, the college and the FIFA World Cup 2026 representatives formed a partnership which will allow up to 50 full-time interns to work at events leading up to the extravaganza next summer.
Some of the positions include government relations, transportation, medical services, catering, media operations and fans operations.
Miami Dade College also has student internships agreements with NASA, Bloomberg and Carnival Corporation.
