Thanksgiving travel to spike on roads, 25,000 people predicted to move through Tallahassee airport

  • November 25, 2025

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Roughly 25,000 passengers are expected to move through Tallahassee International Airport during the Thanksgiving travel period from November 21 through December 1.

“Give yourself plenty of time when traveling, that will make for a much better travel experience overall, said David Pollard, director of Tallahassee International Airport.

Pollard said it’s also important for travelers to check flight statuses.

Fog has affected visibility in recent days, impacting six flights. Between Monday and Tuesday, three flights were diverted and three others did not depart on schedule for Tallahassee.

“If they are en route and weather conditions, visibility in this case, start to go down, that’s when they are making those decisions to possibly divert,” Pollard said.

The weather impacts come during an already busy travel week.

About 4.6 million Floridians are expected to travel for Thanksgiving, a nearly 3% increase from last year and a new holiday record, according to AAA.

AAA spokesperson Mark Jenkins said recent flight disruptions tied to federal government shutdowns may push some travelers to drive instead of fly.

“There’s that likelihood that someone may have seen that and maybe altered their plans a little bit,” Jenkins said. “But really, all that does is create opportunity and more available seats for people who haven’t booked their flights yet. We’re still expecting a very busy air travel period for the Thanksgiving holiday.”

If driving to your holiday destination, AAA recommends hitting the road before noon Tuesday or before 11 a.m. Wednesday. Thanksgiving Day is expected to have the lightest traffic. Most return travel will happen Sunday and Monday, with early mornings or after 8 p.m. being less congested.

Travelers are also urged to check flight statuses and ensure their cars are in good condition. Last year, AAA responded to 600,000 roadside calls for dead batteries, flat tires and lockouts.
