A Florida woman has started a petition to create a new county in Florida, carving out barrier islands along the east coast and naming the area “Trump County.”Trump County would be Florida’s 68th county, and its first new county in 100 years. The last county to be created in Florida was Gilchrist County in 1925.Jen Herold, 40, a Palm Coast homeschool mom, is heading the petition campaign, YouTube channel and social media accounts for the proposed new county, which would honor President Donald Trump.”President Trump is a once-in-a-generation leader, a master dealmaker, real estate titan, and the greatest president of our time,” Herold said on the campaign’s website. “As the first president to call Florida home, it’s time we honor his extraordinary legacy by establishing Florida’s 68th county: Trump County – a lasting testament to his impact on our state and nation.”The proposed 60-mile stretch of land for Trump County would start at the northern point of Anastasia Island and end at the south end of the Ponce Inlet, Herold said in a YouTube video. It would include the barrier islands in parts of St. John’s, Flagler and Volusia counties, according to Herold. The new county would contain approximately 60,000 residents, Herold said.”Imagine the most beautiful 60-mile stretch of the coastline here in Florida, giving it its own county, and naming it after President Trump. That’s Trump County,” Herold said in a YouTube video. Herold said the idea for Trump County occurred to her following additional taxes being passed on the barrier island by Flagler County Commissioners, calling it “taxation without representation.””I’m a neighbor in my neighborhood who is kind of tired of paying for the dunes that I can’t vote on,” Herold said.As of Nov. 25, Herold’s petition has 52 signatures out of its goal of 500.While it is possible to create a new county, it would require action from the Florida legislature and the governor. Herold, who lives in Flagler County, holds an occupational therapy doctorate degree. She also ran as a Republican for a seat in the Ohio state House of Representatives in 2016, but lost in the primary to Thomas Patton. Contributing: Mark Haper, Daytona Beach News-Journal.
