On Saturday Nov. 29, the Sudanese American Community of Tampa will protest the violence happening across Sudan. They want to draw attention to the fighting in the city of El-Fasher in North Darfur State
Eman Sadig is a member of the Sudanese American Community of Tampa Bay.
“The people in El-Fasher, specifically, have been subjected to horrific, horrific violence,” Sadig said.
She said Sudan is facing an intense struggle for power and this demonstration is to bring awareness to the violence.
“At the end of October, the city fell to siege and now the Fashid is essentially under RSF control, and with that breaking of the siege, there was intense, intense amounts of violence,” Sadig said.
Sudan has been under conflict since April of 2023 and in recent months the violence has escalated. Sadig said the city of El-Fasher is falling under the Rapid Support Forces and has been under siege since
“It’s unfortunately gotten the moniker of the forgotten conflict, but it is something that has never been forgotten to Sudanese people because we feel this,” Sadig said.
She said the conflict has been in the background of Sudan’s history, but now its a proxy war.
Participants will be able to view artifacts from Sudan to showcase their culture. There will be a moment of remembrance for victims and chants about “hands off Sudan.”
Organizers are calling for a peaceful demonstration.
The demonstration will take place at 1 in the afternoon at Lykes Gaslight Square Park in downtown Tampa.
