TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – DeOnte Brown, director of the Center for Academic Retention & Enhancement (CARE) at Florida State University, is now the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, per an FSU announcement.
Brown’s experience with the university dates back to 2010, as he previously served as a CARE academic success coach and later as a program coordinator. Brown returned to FSU in 2021 as assistant dean of Undergraduate Studies and as the FSU CARE director.
The CARE program at FSU assists first-generation students, Pell-grant eligible students and those who’ve experienced homelessness or foster care. According to the announcement, the CARE program is a part of the Division of Undergraduate Studies and the Division of Student Affairs.
Per the announcement, Brown is from Quincy and is also a first-generation student. He received his bachelor’s in public administration from the University of Central Florida. He also received a Master’s of Education from FAMU and a Doctor of Philosophy from Clemson University, where he held administrative positions.

Vice President for Student Academic Success Joe O’Shea said in the announcement that Brown impacted the programs greatly.
“He has helped create powerful learning environments that support and engage FSU students to reach their highest potential, and I’m excited to see Dr. Brown bring his thoughtfulness and collaborative energy to this new role,” O’Shea said.
Brown began his new role on Nov. 14 and he will continue to lead CARE as FSU starts a nationwide search for a new FSU CARE director.

“Our outstanding faculty and staff in Undergraduate Studies play a critical role in shaping the undergraduate student experience by fostering student learning, academic engagement and holistic support.
