The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team defeated Temple 90-75 to win the fifth-place game at the Terry’s Chocolate ESPN Events Invitational on Wednesday night.

 

The Rams (6-2) made a season-high 12 3-pointers – seven of which were by Jonah Hinton – and shot a season-best 55.2 percent from the field overall. In the second half, URI scored 49 points as it steadily pulled away from Temple (4-3).

Hinton (25 points) and Tyler Cochran (20 points) led an offense that reached 90 points for the second time this season.

 

The reported crowd was 500, but the TV shots showed less than 100 spectators in the facility.

Rhode Island had 19 assists while turning the ball over a season-low six times.
Both teams were hot offensively in the first half. URI shot 50 percent 15-of-30 (50.0 percent), while Temple was 12-of-25 (48.0 percent).
In the second half, Rhody heated up even more, shooting 60.7 percent (17-of-28).
The last time URI beat Temple twice in a row was 2004-05 and 2005-06, the final two seasons for legendary coach John Chaney.
Jonah Hinton had a career-high 25 points while hitting 7-of-10 from 3-point range before fouling out.
He is the first Ram with seven 3-pointers in a game since Ishmael Leggett against Tulane on Nov. 22, 2022.
Tyler Cochran had a season-high 20 points to go with nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Jahmere Tripp had 14 points and six rebounds. He was 5-of-7 from the field.
Keeyan Itejere had 10 points, four blocked shots and four rebounds.
Damone King provided a season-high seven points in 12 minutes off the bench.
RJ Johnson had four points, five assists and three rebounds while leading the team with a plus-18 in 25 minutes off the bench.
Rhody had a 40-26 edge in the paint and a 16-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
