FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — In an early morning Thanksgiving incident, a driver was shot at while traveling down US-1 in Fort Pierce, leading to a crash into a concrete power pole that erupted into flames, resulting in a temporary road closure.

The Fort Pierce Police Department (FPPD) said that at approximately 2:30 a.m., officers responded to reports of a crash in the 1600 block of US-1.

Upon arrival, police reported finding a vehicle that had collided with a concrete power pole and was on fire. Fortunately, FPPD said that the occupants managed to exit the vehicle before the flames could spread.

According to FPPD, their initial investigations revealed that while traveling southbound on US-1, the driver’s car was fired upon by an unknown vehicle.

As a result, the driver sustained a gunshot wound, lost control, and veered off the road into a pole, which ignited the vehicle, per the report.

Both victims were taken to a local hospital, but their injuries are not life-threatening.

Authorities are still looking for information about the suspect involved in the shooting, as no details have been released at this time.

In the meantime, officials said that US-1, between Avenue O and Avenue M, will be closed in both directions for several hours as crews work to repair the damaged power pole.
