ORLANDO, Fla. — When it comes to the holidays, everyone seems to prepare differently.

Some start decorating on Nov. 1, while for others, it’s the last bite of their Thanksgiving meal that brings the preparations, including Christmas trees.

What You Need To Know

Kelly’s Christmas Trees has been open for 35 years and kicks off their season the week before Thanksgiving

Shortly before and directly after Thanksgiving is when Kelly’s Christmas Trees says they see the most customers

The family-owned business receives its Christmas trees from a tree farm in West Jefferson, North Carolina, and gives their faithful customers a full service

Selling Christmas trees in Florida may seem like an oxymoron, but it is a tradition 35 years strong for the Owen Family and Kelly’s Christmas Trees. And 25 of those years were spent right in Metrowest.

Ryne Owen serves as the tree lot manager and is the son of the owner, Kelly Owen.

He’s been helping out with the family business for the majority of his life and shares that right around Thanksgiving is when business really gets going.

“A lot of people, they either want their tree before Thanksgiving for their Thanksgiving parties or they make it their tradition to go have dinner and then go and pick their tree,” Owen shared.

They partner with Sturgill Tree Farm in West Jefferson, North Carolina, where they bring in trees in all shapes and sizes.

“We have anywhere from tabletop, a little 2-foot tree, to 5 feet and all the way up to 14 at the moment,” explained Owen.

One of their biggest focuses comes with their full service.

You can get your tree trimmed and freshly cut and then put through the balers to help with the transfer home.

Those extra steps make getting into the holiday spirit a bit easier and keep families like the Garrisons coming back.

“You know they did the flocking and because I’m from Pennsylvania originally, and it reminds me of snow-covered trees, it reminds me of back home,” shared 8-year returning customers Jane and Chris Garrison.

This type of reminder is big for Jane Garrison.

She says Christmas traditions were huge for her and her father, but after his death, she’s had to once again find her joy around the holidays and recreate new traditions.

“He made Christmas so magical and for years after he died, I kind of, you know, tried to ignore Christmas but when I met him (Chris), he’s kind of brought that magic back and it’s been full throttle,” Garrison explained.

And it’s those types of stories that keep the Owen Family going.

“So, it’s just fun to serve this community and be able to do something with and for my family but then also for all the other families that we live with and are around,” Ryne Owen said.

The family says they do still have all of their sizes as of Thursday, but the larger ones are very limited. So, they encourage folks to visit them sooner rather than later to get the trees they desire.

Kelly’s Christmas Trees says they typically open the week before Thanksgiving, and their hours are weekdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
