If you’re anything like me, you likely find yourself craving a little something sweet from time to time. It seems like there’s always a situation that necessitates a dessert: being in a good mood, being in a bad mood, after a long day, before a long day, after meals, during meals, and even late at night. The list simply never ends!

In my search for the perfect on-campus sweet treat at FSU, I’ve developed something of a ranking based on my personal preferences. I structured this ranking like a tiered pyramid, beginning with low-tier desserts, then moving on to mid-tier, and ending with top-tier.

For the unfortunate souls who’ve been burdened with an ever-present sweet tooth, this one’s for you.

Tier Three Sweet treats

Third-tier desserts are the ones I’ll go for if I’m running short on time and looking for a quick fix nearby. Maybe I’m just looking to switch things up and get something other than one of my go-tos. I sometimes opt for a third-tier dessert when I’m already at the register and decide to tack something sweet onto my order at the last minute. I’m a sucker for a display case.

Blueberry Muffin (Einstein Bros. Bagels on Learning Way)

The Einstein Bros. Bagels Blueberry Muffin gives you everything you could want out of a blueberry muffin: a light and fluffy cake, a perfect blueberry-to-muffin ratio, and a topcoat of flavorful streusel crumbles. I love a good blueberry muffin; they’re usually my staple in the morning.

However, when compared to other desserts on campus, they simply can’t compete. They’re also relatively breakfast-oriented in nature, which puts them at a disadvantage. With this being said, I still order one from time to time with a bagel.

Kitchen Sink Cookie (Panera Bread at the student Union)

Panera Bread’s Kitchen Sink Cookie is delicious, but there are a few factors that prevent me from ordering it more often. The cookie is essentially a chocolate chip cookie with additives, such as multiple types of chocolate chips, caramel pieces, pretzels, and a flake salt topping.

The salty-sweet combination is one of my personal favorites, which is what originally drew me to this cookie and keeps me coming back. However, the cookie’s flavor can be a bit overwhelming, and the texture tends to be chewier than I like (I prefer a soft, gooey cookie).

Cannoli (Brooklyn Pizza at the student Union)

In my opinion, Brooklyn Pizza at the Student Union is a dessert powerhouse, and they offer a solid cannoli. The Italian pastry comes in two variations: regular and a chocolate-dipped version, which is my personal favorite. As for quality, the ricotta filling is impressively similar to what I’ve experienced in Italian pastry shops, but the shell is often a bit damp and lacks crunch (a cannoli cardinal sin).

Tier Two sweet treats

A second-tier dessert is a dessert that I can expect to enjoy every time. I’ll often seek them out, and I’m never disappointed, but they’re not quite at the level that first-tier desserts are. They’re definitely worth a try, though!

GLUTEN-FREE Chocolate Cake (Brooklyn Pizza at the Student Union)

This one’s for the chocolate lovers out there. Brooklyn Pizza’s Gluten-Free Chocolate Cake is like a slice of velvety chocolate heaven. It’s gluten-free, which means it doesn’t contain flour, so it doesn’t look or taste like a typical slice of cake.

It’s more like a hardened dark chocolate ganache, with a silky texture and rich flavor. I absolutely love chocolate everything, so I personally enjoy it. However, it can definitely be too much chocolate for some people’s taste.

Cuatro Leches (Pollo Tropical at the Student Union)

Pollo Tropical makes a delicious cuatro leches, which is a moist sponge cake with a dulce de leche topping. I’d never had cuatro leches before trying theirs. I can’t speak to its accuracy in terms of replicating authentic versions, but I do enjoy what they have to offer. I particularly enjoy that the sponge cake is doused in sweet milk, which seemed unappetizing at first, but after giving it a chance, I found that I really enjoyed it.

Chocolate Chip Cookie (Suwannee Room)

I simply had to include Suwannee’s classic chocolate chip cookie. This is a personal favorite of mine, as I rarely leave the dining hall without indulging in at least one. While Suwannee cookies can be hit-or-miss, at their best, they’re absolutely divine and make for the perfect little treat. They also make for an excellent ice cream sandwich.

Tier One sweet treats

Alright, now we’re getting into the top-tier sweet treats on FSU’s campus. These are the desserts that consistently impress me and regularly motivate me to walk across campus just to get one. When I’m eating a top-tier dessert, I’m having a great time, and that’s a beautiful thing.

Cake Slice (Honeywhirl Creamery at 1851)

These cake slices are top-tier sweet treats for a reason. Honeywhirl Creamery offers five different cake flavors to satisfy all kinds of preferences, but my personal favorite is the Marshmallow Creamy Cake. This is a chocolate cake that swaps traditional frosting for cookie dough between the layers. These cakes will leave your sweet tooth satisfied and probably have you returning to 1851 for more.

Flan (Pollo Tropical at the Student Union)

Pollo Tropical’s flan scores highly in both the texture and flavor categories for me, making it one of my all-time campus favorites. The custard is smooth, sweet, and features the perfect amount of caramel flavor, coming from someone who doesn’t even love caramel. The caramel sauce at the bottom complements the custard beautifully. Overall, it’s a wonderful dessert and an excellent treat.

Tiramisu (Brooklyn Pizza at the Student Union)

Last but certainly not least, we have Brooklyn Pizza’s tiramisu. Personally, I thoroughly enjoy a dessert that isn’t ultra-sweet, despite evidence to the contrary, so the bitterness of the espresso-soaked ladyfingers beneath the airy mascarpone is one of my favorite flavor combinations.

The dusting of cocoa powder on top complements the dessert, and you get the added benefit of feeling very fancy while eating it. This sweet treat is one of my more recent dessert discoveries, and I anticipate many future trips to Brooklyn Pizza as a result.

These are just a few of the sweet treats that FSU has to offer. There are plenty more where these came from, so you’ll have no shortage of options to explore. Whether you agree or disagree with my rankings, I hope you at least discovered a new sweet treat worth trying!
