Jacksonville’s expansion of higher education institutions might eventually range from semiconductors to souffles.

The Culinary Institute of America, whose award-winning graduates includes the late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, has had some talks with city officials about bringing its school in the art of cooking to Jacksonville.

“Many companies and organizations are considering an expansion into Jacksonville, and the Culinary Institute of America is among them,” city spokesman Phillip Perry said. “There have been a couple preliminary discussions with city leaders, but nothing beyond that is concrete at this point.”

The University of Florida will be starting its first classes in a new graduate campus in Jacksonville in fall 2026. That campus in downtown also will house the Florida Semiconductor Institute.

The talks with the Culinary Institute of America have not advanced to the stage of having a similar development agreement for it.

Founded in 1946, the Culinary Institute of America has long had a leading role in preparing top chefs. The Netflix series “Next Gen Chef” is set in the school’s New York campus where some of its students compete in the show.

The school says its “conferences, leadership institutes and consulting services have made the CIA the think tank of the food industry and its worldwide network of nearly 55,000 alumni includes innovators in every area of the food world.”

The not-for-profit Culinary Institute of America’s main campus is in Hyde Park, New York. The school also has campuses in the Wine Country of California, in San Antonio and overseas in Singapore.

The school offers associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees with majors in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts, food business management, hospitality management, culinary science and applied food studies.

The New York campus has residential housing for students while the San Antonio branch campus is a commuter campus. The San Antonio campus got its start from a $7 million philanthropic gift.
