PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — A new report detailing a nearly three-year investigation into former Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) Sergeant Robert Vega has been released, revealing shocking details from his work devices, though criminal charges against him were ultimately dropped. Vega resigned from the department in May of this year.

The investigation was tied to the 2022 “Martingate” scandal, which involved the alleged recruitment of out-of-district athletes to play for Martin County High School. Vega was originally charged with perjury and grand theft in connection with the case.

The 35-page report detailed substantial evidence of internal policy violations by Vega. Investigators found internet searches related to youth football on his police-issued cell phone and tracked the device to Martin County High School during his work hours. The report also explicitly accused Vega of “wasting time” and “wanton or willful neglect in performing assigned duties.”

Perhaps the most glaring detail revealed in the report involved sexually explicit photos and text messages found on Vega’s work phone. These violations ultimately led to his resignation.

Despite the investigative findings, the criminal charges against Robert Vega were dropped, leaving some residents confused. Vega’s brother, William, faced similar charges but took a plea deal that involved probation and fines. Both brothers were removed from their coaching duties in Martin County.

For some residents, the dropping of charges and the resignation were not enough. One resident said more action needs to be taken.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department was not available for comment regarding the report.
