CLEARWATER — A driver faces charges after crashing through a concrete barrier on U.S. 19 in Clearwater, then running from the scene, police said.

Jon A. Wilson, 26, drove through a stop sign at Nursery Road shortly before 1 a.m., Nov. 25, crossed the southbound access road and slammed into the concrete dividing wall separating the highway’s main lanes from the access road, according to Clearwater police.

The impact sent concrete debris across the southbound lanes, forcing their closure for about four hours, police said.

Wilson ran from the crash site but officers caught him a short time later when he tried to return home, police said. He was treated at Mease Countryside Hospital before being taken to the Pinellas County Jail.

Wilson was charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash with injuries.
