TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) – A second legislative committee approved proposed constitutional amendments Tuesday that would provide significant property tax cuts for Florida homeowners.
Four of eight property tax relief ideas that emerged from an earlier committee advanced through the process, including proposals to eliminate all property taxes and remove them specifically for seniors.
Local governments across Florida continue to oppose the property tax changes. The Florida Constitution requires property taxes as a funding mechanism for local government, and any changes require a voter-approved amendment.
Counties and cities have warned that drastic property tax cuts would create widespread impacts across communities.
“We’re seeing our taxpayers want to have some money back in their pockets. So we’re finding ways to do that. We are going through that process. We will certainly be listening as we move forward,” said Rep. Toby Overdorf, R-Palm City.
Jeff Scala with the Florida Association of Counties said the proposals would disrupt local government funding.
“This is an unbalancing of the equation on how we’re going to fund local government, including the discretionary services. Once we get past those required core essential services, which include public safety, it includes senior services,” Scala said.
The Senate has not announced public plans to address property taxes. Overdorf said conversations are happening behind closed doors in the upper chamber.
