A devastating fire broke out in a North Fort Myers home on Santa Cruz Street, near Cleveland Avenue and Diplomat Parkway, causing significant damage and resulting in the death of more than a dozen pets.

The North Fort Myers Fire Department confirmed the fire was caused by an electrical outlet. Tragically, the home is considered a total loss, and more than a dozen animals perished in the blaze.

“Fire doubles in size every 30 seconds,” said Christi Fulton of the North Fort Myers Fire Department. “He felt heat. He went out and realized that there was a fire and promptly tried to call 911.”

Law enforcement responded to the scene at around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. At least three fire trucks and four deputy vehicles are reportedly stationed.

North Fort Myers Fire Rescue reported that the fire claimed the lives of 14 cats, multiple birds, and three dogs. One dog survived the blaze, and family members were seen holding the rescued canine at the scene.

The remaining number of birds inside the home survived the blaze. It remains unclear how many birds were inside the building.

“We had all the occupants get out safe. One was transported, but with minor burns. And the avenue we’re trying to push right now is there were two rooms that the door was shut and those items in those rooms are so much better off than the rest of the house,” said Fulton.

A photo of a door illustrates how one side is covered in soot while the other remains untouched.

Fulton explained that closed doors helped save a wallet and clothes from destruction. “Smoke is what will cause deaths. Smoke is what causes the destruction of your home. Smoke spreads fast and closing that door gives you a little bit more of a barrier,” said Fulton.

A neighbor spoke with our reporters, stating that they saw the homeowner return home while the house was on fire and that a large amount of smoke was visible.

The Red Cross is assisting the three residents of the home. However, one person sustained injuries in the fire.
