Neo Flores scored 27 points, including two free throws to give Tampa Catholic (Fla.) the lead with 31.8 seconds left, as the Crusaders edged Maryknoll, 70-67, in overtime on Wednesday night.

Sohan Alla added nine points, while KJ Morgan and Tyson Bryant chipped in eight points each for the Crusaders, who endured 13 hours of travel time from Tampa to Dallas to Honolulu just 24 hours earlier. Morgan, a 6-foot-8 center, was a key contributor. He also plays tight end on their football team and signed with Georgia State on Wednesday.

Mission Uperesa-Thomas led Maryknoll (4-2) with 15 points while center Ghesiah Faleafine-Auwae added 14. Keanu Lee tallied 11 points and Kingston Dombrowski chipped in 10.

Chris Du added nine points, including a corner 3 to the game at 59 with 4 seconds left in regulation.

In OT, Flores scored four points. The crafty 5-11 junior swished two foul shots for a 68-67 Tampa Catholic lead with 31.8 seconds to go.

Keanu Lee’s lob pass to a wide-open Uperesa-Thomas sailed over his head and out of bounds.

Don’t miss out on what’s happening!

Sophomore guard Tyson Bryant sank two foul shots for a 70-67 lead with 14.1 seconds left.

Maryknoll got two shots from the arc in the final seconds. Dombrowski missed a contested wing 3, but Du rebounded and fed Uperesa-Thomas at the top of the key. However, his show missed left at the buzzer.

Tampa Catholic (2-2) came into the game averaging 88.7 points per game. The Tony Sellitto Hawaii Invitational awaits today for both teams.

“We wanted an extra game, traveling as far as we did,” Crusaders coach Don Dziagwa said. “We walked on Waikiki Beach today. I touched the Pacific Ocean. I didn’t actually go in. We were talking about we were going to surf. We’ve got a long way to go. We played today without our point guard.”

Skoot Donald sat with a sore knee, which swelled up after their most recent game on Monday. It is a recurring injury that originally happened in the summer.

“He’s had two MRIs and the doctors say they don’t see anything. He’s had his knee drained twice,” Dziagwa said. “Hopefully, he can play (on Thursday). So today, I had to make some adjustments.

The Crusaders played two of our sophomore guards, including Bryant, in crunch time.

The visitors struggled to hit a shot early on, possibly feeling the effects of jet lag. The team landed in Honolulu after a five-hour flight from Tampa to the West Coast. After a two-hour layover, another five-hour flight to the islands.

Maryknoll led 9-3, but after center Ghesiah Faleafine-Auwae picked up his second personal foul, he sat the remainder of the first half. Tampa Catholic chipped away, relentless with fullcourt and halfcourt traps, and took the lead late in the second quarter, pulling ahead 24-21 by intermission.

The visitors got their legs back, using their press to generate steals and points during a third-quarter run. Flores scored 11 third-quarter points, and Tampa Catholic surged ahead, 46-41, early in the fourth quarter.

Maryknoll switched from man defense to a 2-3 matchup zone to slow the Crusaders down.

After Flores hit a tough Euro-step runner in the lane and Sohan Alla swished an elbow jumper, the Crusaders had their biggest lead, 52-43, with less than 6 minutes left.

The Spartans rallied and were within three points with 15 seconds left. Faleafine-Auwae drew a double team in the paint and kicked the ball out to Vu in the right corner. His 3 tied it at 59 with 4 seconds left and Tampa Catholic had time outs, but didn’t use any. A fullcourt shot by the Crusaders missed and the game went into overtime.

Maryknoll led by four, but the Crusaders rallied and took a 64-63 lead on a corner 3 by Aiden Haugabrook with less than 3 minutes left.

Uperesa-Thomas drove for a layup and Maryknoll led 65-64, but the Crusaders regained the lead on two free throws by Bryant.

Faleafine-Auwae went to the charity stripe with 1:44 remaining and missed two shots, but the Spartans regained the lead in their next possession on a putback by Uperesa-Thomas with 55 seconds left.
