Alzheimer’s disease accounts for most of the cases of dementia, a condition characterized by progressive or persistent loss of intellectual functioning.

It has no cure, but the Alzheimer’s Association aims to change that and improve treatments that can slow down symptoms and improve quality of life.

In support of that effort, the association’s Southeast Florida Chapter is hosting the annual “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” on Saturday in Davie.

As of Thursday afternoon, there were 317 teams registered with more than 1,540 participants. They had raised more than $384,000.

The event organizer’s goal is $500,000. The official walk’s T-shirt is $100, and the registration to start a team, join a team, or walk alone can be done online.

Jason Heller, of Coastal Wealth, was the top participant with more than $20,000. He is fundraising in honor of his father and his late grandmother.

The event starts at 8 a.m. at Nova Southeastern University at 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr., and the ceremony and the walk are at 9 a.m.
