A Cape Coral man was arrested after police said he was driving more than 100 mph while driving under the influence.

Javier Alvarez, 27, had been charged with driving under the influence, DUI property damage, DUI refusal, dangerous excessive speeding, fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer, tag-unlawful alteration, carrying a firearm during the commission of a felony, and resisting an officer without violence.

According to Cape Coral Police Department officials, on Thursday at around 2:20 a.m., an officer conducing radar enforcement near 1851 N.E. Pine Island Road saw a silver Volkswagen Jetta traveling 119 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Police officials said the officer activated emergency lights and sirens and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, when the car turned northbound onto Del Prado Boulevard North, lost control, jumped a curb, and crashed into a traffic sign near the intersection.

“The vehicle came became stuck on top of the damaged sign, and the officer was able to detain the driver without losing visual contact,” a CCPD release stated.

Police officials state Alvarez admitted to being the driver of the car, and stated he lost control “due to the vehicle’s manual transmission.”

CCPD officials said the officer observed that Alvarez “displayed signs of impairment, including watery eyes and the odor of alcohol.”

CCPD officials added that a concealed handgun, along with an alcohol-filled flask, was found on his person during a search.

“Based on officers’ observations and performance during Standardized Field Sobriety Evaluations, Alvarez exhibited multiple indicators of impairment,” CCPD’s release states. “Following the crash and DUI investigation, officers placed Alvarez under arrest for Driving Under the Influence. He refused to submit to a breath test. When officers were attempting to put Alvarez in a patrol car for transport to the Lee County Jail, he resisted officers by bracing himself to prevent them from closing the patrol car door. He was restrained and transported without further incident.”

Police officials state the search of Alvarez’s car revealed a cooler containing alcoholic beverages, and that officers also located another individual’s Florida Driver’s License in Alvarez’s possession. This investigation is ongoing.

As of Thursday afternoon, Alvarez was still in custody in Lee County Jail, with his bond not yet set.
