ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Police officials are expected to provide an update this afternoon on the condition of Sgt. Erik Levasseur, the Port St. Lucie officer who was shot twice in the face while on the job.
He responded to a disturbance call at the Town Park community in Tradition Monday. A man inside a home, armed with an assault rifle opened fire on officers. Officers returned fire, killing the gunman. Sgt. Levasseur is still in critical condition.

Last we heard from officials, Levasseur was undergoing a third surgery Wednesday. It’s a specialized procedure to remove a piece of shrapnel lodged in his eye. The surgery is being performed at another trauma center. Levasseur will then return to HCA Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce for continued care and recovery.
Community members say the incident has weighed heavily across the Treasure Coast. “People are just doing their job. Every time I hear something like that happen, it’s really sad,” said Port St. Lucie resident Obdulia Diggs
