Miami Art Week has returned, bringing an electric atmosphere to South Florida as artists, collectors and visitors from around the world pack into our city.
“It’s an amusement park of art,” said artist Jay Durrah, taking in the scene. “Every turn I make, I get a new inspiration.”
Visitors say the excitement is unmistakable.
“The energy is really high, people are really excited, and it’s going to be a busy week,” said Dani Bergman, who was exploring the neighborhood’s installations on opening night.
Across Miami, exhibitions and installations are scattered throughout the city, but inside the Mana Wynwood Convention Center, two major fairs— Red Dot Miami and Spectrum Miami —opened under one roof, featuring work from more than 1,000 artists.
Massive crowds filled the 150,000-square-foot venue, weaving through rows of paintings, sculptures and mixed-media pieces.
“People get recognized here and get picked up by galleries,” said Eric Smith, owner of Redwood Art Group, which hosts the fairs. “It’s a really good place for collectors to discover new talent.”
Many artists and exhibitors traveled long distances to attend. For one family from Colombia, the event marks a milestone.
“We are here because my father is showing his art,” said Daniel Garcia, whose father is a featured artist. “I think it’s the first time he’s doing such a big thing like being here. I’m really proud of him.”
Smith expects 40,000 people to visit Red Dot Miami and Spectrum Miami by the end of the week.
Across the street, NBC6 received exclusive access to the Lina Cerrone Gallery, where curators say their mission is to bring top global talent to Miami.
“Artists who have a special ability, not just to paint but to create something unique from around the world,” said Fredric Lean, co-founder of the gallery. “We want to bring them here to Miami.”
Even for those who aren’t art experts, artists say Miami Art Week offers something for everyone.
“Be yourself and follow what moves you,” said artist Alison Shepard, offering advice to newcomers navigating the art scene.
