Police are investigating charges after a trench collapse left one man dead and two others injured in Miami Township.It all unfolded around 3:49 p.m. when crews responded to Valley Forge Drive for a report of a trench collapse.According to police, the men were building a trench or digging a trench to lay some pipeline and the ground was so soft that it collapsed.Three men were trapped inside. Rescue crews spent hours working to rescue them.One of the men ultimately died. The two others were rescued and taken to the hospital.Both victims who were injured had hypothermia and leg injuries, with both taken to the hospital in critical condition.The names and/or ages of the victims have not yet been released.Police say that a consortium of agencies, including Miami Township police, OSHA, the Clermont County prosecutor’s office and coroner’s office are investigating charges of reckless homicide and negligent assault in connection with the collapse.Police say they’re in the infancy of the investigation, so the charges are not being brought against anyone in particular or any company or entity yet. Investigators said the workers did not have a trench box, which are protective systems used when working in deep trenches and are required by OSHA.
