TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Florida A&M has parted ways with head football coach James Colzie after two seasons on the job, according to a release from FAMU Athletics.
“Coach Colzie’s leadership during a period of transition and uncertainty provided stability and focus for our student athletes,” the release said. “We wish him continued success in his future endeavors.”
The Rattlers are coming off a 5-7 campaign with a 4-4 record in SWAC play with back-to-back losses to end the season, dropping the Florida Classic to arch-rival Bethune-Cookman and the season finale against Mississippi Valley State, the program’s second loss to the Delta Devils in as many seasons.
Colzie was a defensive assistant under Willie Simmons on the Highest of Seven Hills and was named interim head coach in January of 2024 following Simmons’ departure to take an assistant coaching role on Manny Diaz’s staff at Duke. Following a dramatic coaching search, Colzie had the interim title removed at the end of the month.
In its first season under Colzie, FAMU would fall just short of defending its SWAC East title, falling on heartbreaking fashion in the closing minutes on the road at Jackson State and stumbling twice more in league play after that. Florida A&M ended 2024 with a 7-5 record going 7-3 against FCS competition.
Colzie finishes his two-year tenure with a 12-12 record overall with a 9-7 record in SWAC play.
Henry Burris, currently FAMU’s Quarterbacks Coach and Co-Offensive Coordinator, will serve as interim coach for the program until a permanent replacement is named.
