On the heels of multiple off-year electoral victories, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is adding both chambers of Florida’s Legislature to its “Target Map of 2026.”

Florida Democrats, the DLCC said, have a rare opportunity to chip away at Republicans’ grip on state power. The Florida Senate and House are now under the DLCC’s “Break and Prevent Republican Supermajorities” category.

The move follows Democrats’ second Special Election win of the year: an 18-point shift left Tuesday in Palm Beach County’s House District 90, where Democratic Delray Beach Commissioner Rob Long won with 63% of the vote.

Party strategists say that result, paired with DLCC data showing Democratic overperformance of 4.5 points in targeted 2025 contests, signals a political landscape that could deliver the party’s biggest state-level gains in 20 years.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fundamentally transform state legislative power, including making inroads in Florida,” DLCC President Heather Williams said in a statement, adding that the group is preparing its largest budget and target map ever.

“We aren’t wasting a moment.”

Democrats hold far fewer seats than Republicans in both chambers, where the GOP enjoys supermajorities that allow it to pass priority bills with little resistance. But Democratic campaign arms say the narrowest races in 2024 were at the state level, giving them confidence they can protect incumbents and flip additional districts.

“The Florida House Democratic Campaign Committee remains deeply committed to the unique opportunity we know we have in 2026,” said Caucus Director Cassidy Whitaker, pointing to the “Affordability Agenda” Democratic incumbents unveiled this week and a slate of “strong and serious challengers.”

On the Senate side, Jena Kingery, Director of Florida Senate Victory, said Democrats are “thrilled” by the DLCC’s backing as they push messaging centered on wages, costs and long-term affordability.

“With the DLCC as a key partner,” she said, we’re ready to reach every voter to turn the tide and make lasting inroads in legislative districts across the state.”

The DLCC’s announcement follows a pair of Special Election wins Sept. 2, when LaVon Bracy Davis successfully moved from representing Orange County in House District 40 to doing so in Senate District 15. Fellow Democrat RaShon Young, previously a legislative staffer, won Bracy Davis’ old seat.

It also comes the same day as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee expanded its list of 2026 “Districts in Play” to include Florida’s 15th Congressional District, which Republican Laurel Lee currently represents.

The DLCC serves as the national campaign arm for Democratic state legislators and has helped secure nearly a dozen new chamber majorities over the past decade.
