FORT PIERCE — An ammonia leak occurred at the FreshCo packaging company located at 3586 Oleander Ave., in Fort Pierce at approximately 10:28 a.m.

The incident prompted an immediate response from St. Lucie County emergency crews, including a special operations team, who were able to contain the leak and remove any hazardous materials.

Upon the St. Lucie County Fire Department’s arrival, it was found that all employees had already been evacuated. Emergency personnel evaluated several individuals who may have been exposed to the ammonia, but none required hospital transport, according to St. Lucie County Battalion Chief, Kevin Whitaker.

“Our hazmat crews were able to go in and mitigate the leak, and remove any hazards that were there,” stated Whitaker.

According to Whitaker, the cause has yet to be determined.

The situation is under control and no injuries or conditions have been reported.
