Loggerhead Marinelife Center welcomed sea turtles that were battling a condition from extremely cold temperatures in New England earlier this week. Twenty-four Kemp’s ridley sea turtles, which are really rare for South Florida, are vacationing here in the Sunshine State after dealing with some very cold temperatures up north.The sea turtles were transported to South Florida by plane from the New England Aquarium in Boston. Marika Weber is the certified veterinarian technician at Loggerhead Marine Center. “Up in New England, there’s a cold-stunning event usually every year where the water temperatures drop so low where the sea turtles in that area become cold-stunned,” Weber said. Extremely cold temperatures can cause sea turtles to become lethargic. The cold-stunned sea turtles lose mobility and are unable to eat or swim.
