Cape Coral City Council kills plan to more than double their pay

The Cape Coral City Council decided not to move forward with a plan that would have more than doubled the annual salaries of the mayor and council members.The council chose not to move forward with the controversial compensation item during a special meeting at 1 p.m. Wednesday.The Charter Review Commission recommended that council members’ pay increase 112% from $33,000 to $70,000 annually, and the mayor’s 116% pay from $37,000 to $80,000.Moving forward would ultimately have left the decision up to voters by placing a question on the 2026 ballot.The city said the pay will now stay status quo.
