Ephraim Baynard came to Polk County with money from his family’s South Carolina rice plantation.

He built the home in 1894.

The city of Auburndale purchased the home, and high schoolers helped renovate it in the 1990s.

The home is filled with appropriate period pieces — from musical instruments to antique dolls.

And for Christmas, volunteers have dressed it in Christmas finery.

“I think it’s very special. We live in a world that’s disposable,” said volunteer Cindy Hummel. “I think it’s important that we remember.”

Remember the people who came before and helped create the communities we live in today.

There are no set hours for the Baynard House. All you need to do is reach out for a tour — and if you are lucky, you might get someone like Zelda West.

The Ephraim Baynard home has been on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places since 2001.
