PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — CBS12 News is seeking answers about traffic control plans for a proposed professional soccer stadium in Port St. Lucie.
This is after an online petition, which as of Friday morning has gathered more than 900 signatures. The petition is urging Port St. Lucie city commissioners and the mayor to halt the project due to traffic concerns.
New petition calls for Port St. Lucie city leaders to halt soccer stadium project
However, city leaders tell CBS12 News they can handle the traffic. The proposed soccer venue, with a capacity of 6,000 seats, is smaller than Clover Park, which can host more than 7,000 people during the Mets’ spring training.
Scott Samples, a spokesperson for Port St. Lucie, explained, “If you look at what we do for Mets during spring training, there’s more of a police presence. They’re manning traffic controls. They have drones that can go over and see where the traffic is backing up so they can adapt what their strategies are during that.”
The petition organizer stated that the local infrastructure cannot handle the increased traffic volume, emphasized the need for road improvements, and highlighted the community’s need for amenities for children and families.

Business owners near the proposed site at Walton and US 1 are optimistic about the economic benefits the stadium could bring. City leaders say that more residents support the project than oppose it.
