FLORIDA – Former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner is calling on state lawmakers to convene a special legislative session before the Christmas holiday to roll back property taxes, saying Floridians need “immediate relief.”
Renner, who is running for governor, wants the Legislature to reverse property taxes to 2024 levels by the end of the year. He argues that waiting for long-term reform would leave homeowners and renters struggling under rapidly rising costs.
“There are people on fixed incomes, people struggling to make ends meet,” Renner said in an interview. “This proposal is the only way under the constitution to do a two-thirds rollback that would allow for an immediate reduction in property taxes. And these aren’t just homestead property taxes — these are renters and others who are struggling under the high cost of things.”
Renner said the rollback would not apply to new construction or properties that were not on the tax roll in 2024. But for most Floridians, he said, the impact would be simple.
“The easiest thing is to pull out your tax bill from 2024 — that’s what you’d be paying right now,” he said. “Taxes have been going up double digits for the last several years. They’ve increased more than 50% in the last five years, well in excess of people’s incomes.”
The push comes amid broader debate over property tax reform in Florida. House leaders have introduced at least eight proposals aimed at reducing property taxes, and Gov. Ron DeSantis announced last week that he wants to eliminate property taxes entirely. DeSantis said the state could use surplus funds to cover any revenue shortfall for local governments.
Several proposals moving through the House focus on reducing or eliminating non-school property taxes for homesteaded properties. Options range from full elimination to gradual phase-outs and targeted exemptions, with most intended for the 2026 ballot.
It remains unclear whether Renner’s call for a special session has gained any traction among legislative leaders.
