Southwest Florida’s biggest beer festival kicks off on Oct. 17 as Cape Coral’s German American Social Club marks 40 years of Oktoberfest.
The festival runs Oct. 17-19 and Oct. 24-26 at 2101 S.W. Pine Island Road, drawing 40,000 visitors yearly. “Everyone’s just always smiling,” said Oktoberfest chairman Ed Freund, according to The News-Press. “I meet people every year, and I hardly ever see a grumpy face here.”
Music fills the air with sounds from across the Atlantic. Knappenkapelle of Bavaria and KaBeGl of Wendelstein flew in for the shows. They’ll share stages with the Manni Daum Trio, Duo Surprise, The Boots Band, and the club’s Hafenkapelle musicians.
What started as a small members’ party in 1964 grew into Florida’s top Oktoberfest celebration. “There are some other Oktoberfests, but I believe (Cape Coral’s) is the biggest one in Florida,” said Wolf Pech, who leads the German American Social Club.
Ms. Oktoberfest Sara Skorak will watch over the fun, including the much-loved stein-holding battles. “We have genuine German musicians that we have played at Oktoberfest in Munich. We really do try to bring Munich to Cape Coral,” she said.
Each year brings $15,000 in donations to groups like American Legion Post 90, Cape Coral Caring Center, and Hope Healthcare. “We like to give back to the community,” Freund said. “We always do as much as we can.”
