TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The family of five-year-old Missy Mogle joined community members in southeast Tallahassee to honor her life by planting a tree at a playground where she loved to play.
Missy’s grandmother, Pepper Mogle, attended the emotional memorial along with other family members and residents of the Southwood community. Together, they planted a red oak tree as a lasting tribute to the young girl.
“She was a very loving, high-spirited little girl who always had a smile on her face no matter what,” said her grandmother, Pepper Mogle, with tears in her eyes.

Missy was found unresponsive in May at a Southwood home after investigators say she was beaten and smothered. Her mother, Chloe Spencer, and stepfather, Daniel Spencer, have since been arrested and accused of cruel neglect and abuse in connection with her death.
Pepper Mogle said Missy liked to play outside, so it was fitting to have the memorial at the Southwood playground.
Mogle said the tree reflects Missy’s love of nature. “She loved the pretty colors on different trees,” she said.
As the case moves forward, family members are also advocating for change. A proposal known as “Missy’s Law” has been filed to prevent the release of dangerous criminals on bail while they await sentencing.
Mogle said she hopes the tree and the plaque at the site will keep her granddaughter’s name and memory alive, adding that “kids’ opinions about what’s happening do matter and not to push it away.”
