JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (WBRC) – Police in east Alabama say they are working to catch thieves and protect the community while Christmas shopping.
Jacksonville Police Police Chief Marcus Wood tells WBRC they are ramping up patrols at stores within the city.
Wood says part of their plan for this holiday shopping season is to position both marked patrol cars and undercover, unmarked units around stores.
Additionally, as homeowners wait for Amazon and UPS deliveries, Chief Wood added that residents will likely see officers their neighborhood too, working to stop porch pirates.
“So, we will have people out in the neighborhoods, marked and unmarked, trying to protect those people who are also having those packages delivered from people who are trying to commit harm by making our citizens victims of theft,” Wood shared.
Here’s something for would-be porch pirates to consider.. as of October, there is now a new law in Alabama making repeated package theft a felony.
