Florida State set its sights on three-star edge Cam Brooks back in 2023, and they had him on campus that January during a Junior Day event. After several visits to Tallahassee during the rest of the year, and a plethora of others in 2024, FSU was at the top of the list in the recruitment of Brooks.

Although he took a visit back in March to see the Seminoles, Brooks got the feeling that the program didn’t want him, and he committed to the California Bears in April. In late November, Brooks decommitted from California, and Florida State didn’t waste time getting back in the mix and eventually closed the deal.

“Oh man. It was crazy. When I decommitted, a good number of schools were reaching out,” Brooks said via Warchant. “Florida State was actually one of the last schools to contact me. But they made it clear when we talked that any time I wanted to commit, they wanted me. And that’s all I needed. They wanted me.”

Brooks had 35 offers from some of the top schools around the nation, like Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, and USC. However, for Brooks, FSU was always the top choice for him.

“It’s been a blessing. That’s the first thing I can say,” said Brooks last week. “It’s been a huge blessing, because who would’ve thought Florida State, first off? Last week, I decommitted from Cal … didn’t know what to expect because I was committed to them for so long. Lost contact with a lot of coaches. …

“This was the dream school before my recruitment started. This was my dream school. They just weren’t really recruiting me. Then 360 (degrees), now I’m going here.”

Defensive coordinator Tony White was the first person that Brooks contacted when he decided to commit to the Seminoles, and it was followed by a FaceTime call with head coach Mike Norvell. Brooks is also looking forward to being guided by FSU’s new edge coach Nick Williams, who also recruited him at one point.

Brooks is fresh off a game where he had six tackles and three tackles for loss for Thomas County Central as they defeated Roswell in the Georgia state semifinals. Next week, he’ll get to play for a state title before he enrolls at Florida State in early January.
