TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tampa officials will host a meeting Thursday to get the community’s input on the West River BUILD project, which will expand the popular downtown riverwalk to the west side of the Hillsborough River.

In addition to the two-mile Riverwalk addition, the project also includes road, sidewalk and safety improvements.

“It’s really exciting. We put a great deal of effort into the planning and design. It’s going to connect four different neighborhoods, and it’s actually going to be an over 12-mile loop,” Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said.

The east side of the Riverwalk is focused more on entertainment and tourism uses, while the west side will focus on providing a transportation option for residents to get to work and school. It will pass by the University of Tampa and increase connectivity with downtown.

Tampa officials hope residents will weigh in on what amenities they would like to see along the trail so they can plan and design it with community input. Castor said the proposed ideas include overlooks and “living sea walls” with vegetation that provide opportunities to view wildlife.

The meeting will be held Thursday at Beulah Baptist Church from 6 to 8 p.m. The project is expected to break ground next week.
