Temple Israel to ‘proudly celebrate’ Hanukkah this week while remaining ‘vigilant’ following Australia attack

  • December 15, 2025

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Festival of Lights took a dark turn for Jewish communities across the globe over the weekend, when news emerged of a mass shooting at an Australia celebration that has claimed at least 15 lives.

In Tallahassee, Rabbi Paul Sidlofsky told WCTV his congregation will continue to celebrate Hanukkah and focus on the holiday’s power to “increase light” during a dark time.

“Our message, especially this year- Hannukah is a time of light,” he said.

Rabbi Sidlofsky said over the phone Monday that they’ll “take time to mourn, but also be vigilant and hopeful for a future, and really commit even more to sharing our Jewish values.”

“To see this kind of attack during a time that’s supposed to be joyful…is especially painful,” he said.

Authorities in Australia identified a father and son as suspects in the shooting at Bondi Beach Sunday. In addition to the 15 people killed, at least 40 were hospitalized.

“We are continuing to be vigilant in terms of security… and will continue to do so,” Rabbi Sidlofsky said. “We are certainly going to continue to welcome people and to fully carry on with our programs and proudly celebrate our religion and heritage.”
