TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Florida State University’s College of Music is offering a new major for students.
The new Community Music program is the first of its kind in the nation, according to FSU. The program’s focus is to use music to connect, serve and build community.
The degree program culminates in a Bachelor of Arts after 120 credit hours spread over subjects like music analysis and music in contemporary society. The program also features courses in entrepreneurship, arts administration, grant writing and social work.
Rather than audition, those applying to the Community Music program will submit sample videos and complete an interview process. FSU describes the program as something for students “with nontraditional music backgrounds.”
The Community Music program “allows students to combine their love of music with hands-on community engagement,” according to the university.
Community partners like COCA, Tallahassee Ballet and Word of South Festival provide experiential learning and service opportunities.
FSU describes this degree path as flexible and allowing students to “explore complementary fields or easily add a minor in areas like business, social work, or other disciplines.”
The final application deadline for the Community Music program is February 1.
