Inter Miami is finalizing a deal to re-sign Luis Suárez for the 2026 season, sources briefed on the deal have told The Athletic.
Suárez, who turns 39 in January, returns for another year.
Inter Miami just won MLS Cup earlier this month, with Suárez an unusued substitute in the final. Miami managing owner Jorge Mas confirmed after the club’s win that it was possible Suárez would return.
Suárez scored 17 goals and had 17 assists in 50 appearances (4,046 minutes) across all competitions, another productive season although he lost his spot in the starting lineup by the end of the playoff run.
The forward was suspended for game three of their round one playoff series against Nashville and was left out of the starting lineup for the next three games upon his return.
Suárez also was suspended earlier in the season for spitting on a Seattle Sounders security director after the Leagues Cup final. He was handed a six-game Leagues Cup ban and will be suspended for that entire competition in 2026.
The Athletic reported on Dec. 7 that Suárez could return for another season as a reserve.
The legendary forward joined Miami ahead of the 2025 season, reuniting with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets. Busquets and Alba retired this winter but Suárez and Messi continue on.
Suárez began his career in 2005 with Nacional before heading to Europe. He featured for FC Groningen and Ajax before joining Liverpool in a big money transfer. He was an instant success in England and, after a record-breaking 2013-14 season, was transferred to Barcelona.
With Barcleona, Suárez won four league titles and one Champions League. He had 195 goals and 113 assists in 283 appearances for the Catalan club.
After Barcelona, Suárez won another La Liga title with Atletico Madrid. He then returned to Nacional for half a season, winning another title, before spending time with Gremio, where he was named Player of the Year in 2023.
The Miami Herald first reported the deal.
