Lee County has launched a new online tool aimed at enhancing transparency in the code enforcement process.
The new online tool is an interactive map called the Â
This new interactive map displays the entire county and various types of code enforcement data through color-coded dots, helping residents understand the status of code compliance complaints in their area.
The county says the map aims to enhance transparency by providing case locations and status updates, addressing common code enforcement questions on an easily accessible site.
The site also provides insights into Code Enforcement operations, such as the process from initial findings to potential fines, differences between illegal dumping and nuisance accumulation, community outreach, filing complaints, and seeking assistance.
When a violation is identified, a Code Enforcement specialist investigates on-site. Property owners are notified and given a chance to address the issue voluntarily. If unresolved, the case may lead to hearings or County-initiated cleanup operations.
During a recent WINK Listens event in Lehigh Acres, residents voiced their concerns over code enforcement issues.
Marlyn Castner expressed frustration, saying, “The chatter has been that there’s a need to incorporate, you know, and hire more officers because of the lawlessness and the code enforcement. They’re all spread very thin.”
Kenneth Berus said, “Lee County has been ignoring Lehigh Acres all these years.”Â
Sisters Cathi Boivin & Karen Rock also voiced their dissatisfaction, saying, “I call code enforcement all the time. They never show up.”
Lorna and Delroy Howell noted the growing challenge, saying, “It’s just getting worse, because population is growing drastically, so maybe tripled over the past couple of years, especially since Ian.”
The county tells WINK News, the idea for the map blossomed as county staff continue to seek technology-based solutions to enhance community engagement. Work on this tool began earlier this year.
In August, Commissioner Brian Hamman directed staff to plan a Commissioners workshop on nuisance abatement and Code Enforcement. This workshop, held earlier this month, introduced the new tool and covered the legal framework of code enforcement, the increase in violations, and strategies to boost compliance and community collaboration.
Nuisance accumulation involves the buildup of materials or debris on private property, like garbage, inoperable vehicles, and debris on private properties.Â
Nuisance accumulations pose risks by creating unsafe conditions and attracting pests. They can arise from neglect, storm damage, or improper disposal practices. During natural disasters, loose debris can become hazardous projectiles.
an increase in code violations over the years, and with the new tool, residents can clearly see that Lehigh Acres has the most violations.
According to the county, the average fine imposed by the Hearing Examiner is $38 per day, and the average cost for County abatement is about $5,000 per cleanup.
Members of the public can check an address for active Code Enforcement cases or report potential violations through Lee County’s online . Florida State Statute 125.069 requires complainants to provide their name and address.
