It’s the holiday season, the season of giving and while you may not know it, many of your neighbors may be going without. We’re not talking presents or toys for the kids, we’re talking food. A basic necessity none of us can live without.

More and more, the rising costs of housing, healthcare and groceries is making it hard for people with full time jobs to cover the cost of basic living expenses. Many have to make hard choices on whether to use their money to cover rent, utilities, medicine or food and many parents skip meals so their kids can eat. These are working families, individuals and seniors who don’t know where their next meal will come from.

The United Way’s 2025 ALICE Report (ALICE is an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) found that between ALICE households and households living in poverty, an estimated 47% of households in Florida were below the ALICE Threshold in 2023. For Miami-Dade and Broward counties those numbers were even higher with Miami-Dade at 53% and Broward at 50%.

This is why NBC6 and Telemundo 51 are launching The Great Giveback / Juntos Para Dar to address food insufficiency in our community. To kick-off our year-long campaign we are asking those of you who can to please donate money to Feeding South Florida, the leading hunger relief organization in Florida serving Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach Counties.

With a donation of $1, Feeding South Florida tells us they can provide four meals and every dollar stays local. Their Pembroke Park pantry is open seven days a week and has seen an increase in the number of people they serve. In 2024 Feeding South Florida served 8,447 clients, but as of 11/30/2025 they have served 19,963, more than double the amount of clients for the entire 2024 year.

In the coming year we will be telling stories about food scarcity, the people being impacted and the people/organizations doing their best to help. But for today and for the rest of the holiday season, we ask you to please make a donation to Feeding South Florida. Even small donations make a big difference.

Feeding South Florida’s mission is to end hunger in South Florida by providing immediate access to nutritious food, leading hunger and poverty advocacy efforts and transforming lives through innovative programming and education. They are a 4 Star Charity Navigator organization.
