Decision Day in Major League Soccer is here, and Orlando City has one last chance to earn a better seeding heading into the postseason.
The Lions (14-8-11, 54 points) play at Toronto FC (5-14-14, 29 points) Saturday at 6 p.m., and a victory means Orlando City won’t have to play in a wild-card match.
“Recognizing the importance of the day and the consequences that the results can bring to the clubs, it is a fantastic moment for MLS,” Orlando City coach Oscar Pareja said about Decision Day. “We’re getting ready, receiving the players that have been away [on international duty] and trying to rejoin everyone again, so we’re good.”
Orlando City has a fairly good record of 4-4-3 in Toronto, going unbeaten in the last six matches north of the border. The Lions’ last loss at Toronto came in 2018, and they have won three straight at BMO Field.
The Lions have won each of their last two regular-season finales on the road while Toronto has been one of the worst teams in MLS at home this season. Toronto has won just twice at home, and a loss here establish the team’s worst-ever home record for a season.
Offense has been the key to Orlando’s success this season, with a club-record 61 goals. The Lions have typically been a defense-first squad under Pareja but have uncharacteristically struggled at the back this year.
Orlando City has gone eight matches without a clean sheet and has kept just eight all season. With 11 goals and seven assists this season, Toronto’s Djordje Mihailovic poses the biggest threat to the Lions wrapping up the regular season on a positive trajectory.
