TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – As the date for the World Athletics Cross Country Championship quickly approaches, chairs of the event excitedly anticipate its economic impact.
The family-friendly event comes to the capital city on January 10 at Apalachee Regional Park. The event is the pinnacle of cross-country, as the sport is no longer in the Olympics. Organizers said that they expect Olympians to be in attendance.
So far, 2500 tickets have been sold from all 50 states, with tickets still on sale. While this is not the largest event Tallahassee has hosted, it is the first world championship.

Executive Director of Visit Tallahassee, Kerri Post, said she is looking forward to the event. “I’m so excited. I know this is just going to be a tremendous event for our community, not just in the visitor spending of everybody coming, but also truly the global visibility for our community.”
The two-kilometer course is designed with Florida themes. The start line is a replica of the Old Historic Capital and when it opens, the runners appear as if they’re running out of the capital. It also includes sand from Florida’s beaches, a man-made “rollercoaster” and a mud pit.
Organizers are also working on making changes to allow alcohol to be sold.
