Florida drivers might see a future break at toll booths. Gov. Ron DeSantis discussed the possibility of eliminating tolls during a recent cabinet meeting.

WINK News reporter Paul Dolan was live at the Sanibel Causeway to gather community reactions. He found that while some drivers love the idea of saving money, others have their doubts.

It’s important to note that this is currently just an idea. There is no proposal or clear path forward.

Drivers in the area have mixed feelings about tolls. Crossing the Cape Coral Bridge costs up to $5, while driving to Sanibel can cost $9 with Pay-By-Plate. Greg and Ginger Arnold realized how quickly these costs add up.

“I never took the time to add it up before,” said Greg Arnold. “Yeah, I want it back now,” said Ginger Arnold.

The idea suggests giving Florida residents a break at toll booths while visitors continue to pay. Drivers expressed divided opinions on this concept.

“They would be grumbling and murmuring, but they’d probably pay it,” said one driver, Rose. “Why is that? Well, because they want to be here and they want to enjoy the scenery.”

“I just don’t know how tourists would support it all,” said another driver, Alan.

While the idea remains just a concept for now, drivers crossing and paying tolls can agree that the costs add up.
