For our Key Biscayne fishermen, it’s been another up and down week of wind and rain mixed with a bit of calmer weather this past week.

One fish that has been cooperating has been tarpon. Tarpons in the 20-60 pound range have been providing nighttime action on the outgoing tides. A few recent shrimp rubs have the tarpons lined up in the Key Biscayne Channel, Bear Cut, along the south side of Hobie Beach and of course in Government Cut. Live shrimp, or shrimp imitation artificials, fished on the surface or near the bottom is the best way to get silver kings on your line.

The offshore bite continues to be spotty. Kingfish, blackfin tunas, bonitos, sailfish, wahoo and Mahi have all been caught this past week. Most of the action is taking place outside the outer reef. Live baits are producing the most action but trolling Sea Witches and drone spoons are producing as well. Drifting fresh Spanish sardines and ballyhoos will get you strikes, especially if you chum with chunks of cut sardines and ballyhoos as you drift. The action is taking place between the depths of 100-300 feet of water. Concentrate your efforts in areas of artificial reefs, the sewer outfall and along currents with broken weedlines.

The humps off Government Cut continue to produce steady tuna action late in the day. Sharks are always a problem here. The daytime bottom bite has been fair with a few mutton and yellowtail snappers being caught. The hard bottom outside of 100 feet of water is providing the best action.

At night, bluefish, an assortment of snappers, grunts and jacks are providing action over the reefs. The outside of the outer reefs have been the best producers this past week.
