Stuart, FL/CBS12 News — Martin County has a role in housing illegal immigrants who are being detained in south Florida.

According to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek, the Martin County Jail in Stuart is an ISGA-certified jail.

The term IGSA stands for Intergovernmental Service Agreement.

That means it’s a county-run jail that has a contract to house detainees.

“We are what we call an IGSA-certfied jail, one of the only IGSA-certified jails in the state of Florida. So as anybody arrests illegals in this seven-county area, they bring them to our jail, house them for up to 72 hours and move them out,” Sheriff Budensiek explained a few days ago.

We’re working on a story about this. Among the questions, what are the seven counties? How much is the federal government paying the Martin County Sheriff’s Office to house these detainees in the Martin County Jail?

We hope to get answers to some of these questions later today.
