Three people, including the suspect, are dead following a double shooting in Port St. Lucie Monday afternoon.
Port St. Lucie police responded to the 2700 block of SE Tropical East Circle at around 3:15 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire and that two men were shot in two different locations within the community.
Police identified the suspect as Paul Maraio, 62, who had reportedly run to a third home and held a woman hostage inside.
Officers negotiated with Maraio for over two hours before releasing the hostage. The suspect remained inside the home by himself, armed and barricaded, and reported he had shot himself.
Maraio was found in the home with a gunshot wound to the chest and was taken to the hospital.
Maraio was pronounced dead just before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said in an update to the investigation.
The two men were pronounced dead from gunshot wounds inside their separate homes.
Authorities believe that an ongoing neighbor dispute ultimately led to the altercation.
