CHARLOTTE COUNTY – The Florida Highway Patrol reported a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred Sunday afternoon along State Road 776 (El Jobean Road) at the intersection of Jacobs Street in Charlotte County.

According to FHP, the crash happened on December 21, 2025, at approximately 1:07 PM, and resulted in the death of a 19-year-old motorcyclist from Englewood.

How the Fatal Motorcycle Crash Happened on SR-776

At the time of the collision, the 19-year-old man was operating a motorcycle traveling southbound on SR-776 in the outside lane, approaching the intersection with Jacobs Street. FHP reports that the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed.

At the same time, a 39-year-old woman from North Port was driving a sport utility vehicle that was stopped in the left-turn lane on SR-776 at Jacobs Street. According to the report, the SUV proceeded to make a left turn onto Jacobs Street.

As the vehicle turned, the front of the motorcycle collided with the right side of the SUV. Following the impact, the motorcyclist became separated from the motorcycle.

Crashes involving motorcycles and left-turning vehicles are often closely reviewed during investigations because of the timing, visibility, and intersection dynamics involved. This observation is general in nature and is not a determination of fault in this case.

What Happened After the Motorcycle Collision

The motorcyclist sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. FHP confirmed that the rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and that next of kin has been notified.

The driver of the SUV and a 9-year-old passenger were not injured.

Traffic homicide investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene, and the crash remains under investigation. No additional details have been released at this time.

What Families Should Know After a Fatal Motorcycle Crash in Florida

Losing a loved one in a fatal motorcycle accident in Florida is sudden and devastating — especially when the victim is so young. Families are often left trying to process grief while also facing unanswered questions about how the crash happened and what comes next.

While no legal process can undo such a loss, having clear, reliable information can help families move forward with greater understanding.

How Florida Investigates a Fatal Motorcycle Crash

After a fatal motorcycle accident, the Florida Highway Patrol conducts a traffic homicide investigation. This process may involve reviewing witness statements, documenting vehicle damage, analyzing roadway evidence, and evaluating factors such as speed, visibility, and intersection movements.

“In fatal motorcycle crashes, investigators don’t just look at a single factor,” said Danny Murphy, a senior partner at Goldman Babboni Fernandez Murphy & Walsh. “They often analyze vehicle damage, roadway measurements, and event timing to reconstruct how the collision occurred and understand the full sequence of events.”

“That process takes time,” Murphy added. “It’s not unusual for families to wait weeks or even months for a final report, and during that time, many are left with questions about what the investigation may ultimately show.”

Florida Laws That Apply in Motorcycle and Left Turn Crashes

Florida traffic laws set responsibilities for both motorcyclists and other drivers. In crashes involving left turns, investigators typically examine factors such as right-of-way, visibility, speed, and reaction time.

In Florida, motorcycle and intersection crashes are evaluated under traffic statutes including Florida Statute 316.122, which governs turning movements at intersections, and Florida Statute 316.083, which addresses overtaking and passing.

“Florida traffic laws provide a framework for investigations, but they don’t automatically decide who is legally responsible,” said David L. Goldman, a founding partner of the firm. “Every fatal motorcycle crash is fact-specific, and liability depends on the totality of the evidence — not one detail taken out of context.”

Motorcyclists, like all drivers, are expected to operate their vehicles safely and in accordance with traffic laws. Drivers making left turns must also ensure that the roadway is clear before proceeding through an intersection.

Why Speed and Left Turn Crashes Are Closely Reviewed

Crashes involving motorcycles and left-turning vehicles are often complex. Investigators may look closely at the speed of the motorcycle, the timing of the turn, line-of-sight issues, and the overall layout of the intersection.

This analysis helps explain how a crash occurred, but it does not automatically place blame on any party.

Insurance Coverage After a Fatal Motorcycle Accident

Fatal motorcycle crashes often involve multiple layers of insurance coverage, which may include bodily injury liability coverage, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, motorcycle-specific policies, and estate-related claims.

Because these matters can be complicated, families sometimes seek guidance to help identify available coverage, manage insurance communications, and ensure important deadlines are not missed.
