TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Plans to move Tallahassee’s Police Station from Seventh Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd is still on track, according to the Chief of Police.
Right now, construction is set to finish up in December of next year.
The project was delayed one year, and the price went up by at least $80 million. But the good news is that Chief Lawrence Revel said the new price is locked in, and the new substantial completion date is on track.
There are some new visible signs of construction at the Northwood Parcel off N Monroe St, which will be anchored by TPD’s new headquarters.
So far, almost all of the work has been underground, but structures are finally popping up
“Our biggest room right now holds about 40 people, and so we’ll have one that’ll hold 300 to 350 people so we can have our community events there. Plenty of parking, parking’s not going to be a trouble. So it is going to be an amazing building that the community is just going to love, and certainly we will as well,” said Chief Revell.
City plans also call for a mobility hub, a pedestrian walkway, and a community/arts district. While the specifics are still being hashed out, the chief said TPD will have four buildings of its own, and they’re excited.
“It’s going to have a museum in it that people can come in and tour the museum and see the history of the police department and buy police department memorabilia if they want books and those kinds of things,” the chief said.
The project was supposed to be completed this year, but is now set to be “substantially complete” by December of 2026.
TPD will move in shortly thereafter in 2027. Costs have risen by at least $49 million up to a max of $145 million.
“And as much as that cost jumped, we are still holding our costs less than most other projects in the state.
The new HQ will have an indoor gun range, allowing TPD to do most of their training on site versus traveling to a shared facility.
One part of this site, the police department is really excited about, is a memorial for fallen officers.
”And so that ceremony is going to be amazing, but it’s just a beautiful area right outside the building that pays tribute to those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice,” Chief Revell said.
