The 24th annual Wheels for Kids Holiday Giveaway brought joy to the Reeves Terrace neighborhood in Orlando on Monday evening, as children received 130 kick scooters, thanks to the generosity of the community.The festive atmosphere resembled a presidential motorcade, with Orlando police, Orlando firefighters, other major contributors, Santa Claus and one of his favorite elves arriving at Langford Park. Children aged 5 to 15, who had been pre-identified, were honored with the scooters.Orlando police Chief Eric Smith emphasized the importance of the event for the children and their families.”I’m just excited that we get to give back to the community, especially now, the way the economy is,” said Telisha Glover, a parent. “It’s been a lot harder for us to provide for our kids the way we want, so I look forward to this every year. I really appreciate this.” Her 6-year-old son, Kai, who had his scooter stolen last year, was thrilled to receive a new one. Kai told WESH 2 he was so excited about getting a new scooter.All the children also received helmets to ensure their safety.The scooters were made possible through donations, and Cherish Holiday was another happy recipient. “Cherish, go ahead, give Santa a hug. Merry Christmas, Cherish,” she was encouraged. For Commissioner Patty Sheehan, the event holds personal significance. “My parents couldn’t afford it,” she said. “And you know, when you get a chance to pay it forward for children that are hard-working parents, they just want to give their kids a good Christmas, and you know, when you get a chance to pay it forward, that’s what life is about. That’s what Christmas is all about.”Janelyx Soto, another recipient, expressed her excitement, saying, “I’m going to ride it to the park.
