Miami Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck, a Georgia Bulldogs transfer, was happy to earn a 10-3 road win over the Texas A&M Aggies in the first-round of the College Football Playoff. Beck did not have his best game against Texas A&M, but he avoided turnovers and did enough to win thanks to Miami’s outstanding defensive performance.
The weather certainly played a factor in Miami-Texas A&M. Both teams struggled mightily in the kicking game partially due to windy conditions.
Against Texas A&M, Beck completed 14 of 20 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. Beck and Miami became the lowest scoring team to ever win a College Football Playoff game. Miami (10 points) has by far the lowest point total of any team to win a playoff game. The previous lowest point total for a winning team was the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who scored 23 points in their Sugar Bowl win over Georgia last season.
It is fascinating that 23 points was the lowest total for a winning team before the Miami game. It shows that college football tends to have shootouts and/or blowouts even in the playoff. However, this year’s playoff could see more low-scoring affairs considering the abundance of defensive talent in the playoff.
Of course, Beck and Miami would much rather be the lowest scoring team to win in the playoff than the alternative of losing.

Things aren’t about to get easier for the Miami offense. The Hurricanes will play the Ohio State Buckeyes in quarterfinals of the playoff. Ohio State leads the nation in passing defense (129.1 yards allowed per game), total defense (213.5 yards allowed per game) and scoring defense (8.2 points allowed per game). It is safe to say that this Ohio State defense will be the biggest challenge Carson Beck has faced in his career.
