Safety improvements coming to North Monroe Street thanks to $16.8 million federal grant

  • December 24, 2025

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Safety is expected to be improved on North Monroe Street thanks to a $16.8 million federal grant, according to the Leon County Government.

County officials secured the grant Tuesday from the U.S. Department of Transportation through the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SSFA) program for the North Monroe Street Safety Implementation project, officials wrote in a press release Wednesday.

The funding is expected to support “corridor-wide safety upgrades along seven miles of North Monroe Street (US 27/SR 63) for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers” from West Tharpe Street to Capital Circle NW/Old Bainbridge Road, per the release.

Furthermore, the project is estimated to cost $21 million, including a required match funded through Blueprint, according to officials.

Commission Chairman Christian Caban said the county is proud to receive the grant.

“North Monroe Street is a vital part of our community,” he said. “These improvements will make the corridor safer and more accessible for residents, visitors, and businesses.”

County officials said planned improvements include:

Install pedestrian fencingFill bike lane and sidewalk gapsConstruct raised mediansAdd median refugesAdd signalized mid-block crossingsInstall high-emphasis crosswalksUpgrade intersections with targeted safety features.

Commission Rick Minor believes that with the help of the grant, serious crashes will be reduced and vulnerable roadway users, such as pedestrians and bicyclists, will be protected.

“North Monroe Street is a vital corridor for our community, and this significant federal investment will help us deliver meaningful, measurable safety improvements for everyone who uses it,” he said.

The grant comes a year after Commissioner Minor launched a petition aimed at contributing to North Monroe Street improvements.

The project implementation schedule over the next five years includes state and local planning in 2026, with survey and design complete in 2027, the release said.

Development and construction are expected from 2028 to 2030.
