The transfer portal is the greatest gift to some teams on Christmas, and it is the coal in the stocking for many other programs across the country in college football.
On Wednesday, the Florida Gators and their new head coach, Jon Sumrall, opened an empty present as one of their top recruits a few years ago, a five-star recruit, has announced his plans to search for a new home next fall.
Wide receiver Eugene Wilson III was seen as the future of the Gators wideout room when he signed with the team in 2023 and burst onto the scene with an incredible freshman season.
In 2023, Wilson III played in 10 games, recording 593 scrimmage yards and six touchdowns. Injuries, though, slowed him down the next two years, with a hip surgery in 2024 followed by a high ankle sprain, which also needed surgery the following year.

When healthy, though, Wilson III is a gamebreaker who can cause defenses to implode on themselves as he goes for big yardage and darts down the field.
While the ankle injury took him out for the end of 2025, he is expected to make a full return come spring practice for whichever program he decides to sign with in the upcoming transfer portal, which begins on the second day of the new year.
Overall, in his three years as a Gator, Wilson III put up 1110 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns. If he can have a healthy 2026, then he could be an X-factor for a powerhouse school that is trying to make a run for the College Football Playoff crown.
